Much has changed in the manner in which care home are inspected in the past year or so. The five key domains Safe, Effective, Caring, Responsive and Well-Led form the basis of the “new style” of CQC's inspections.
Though each of these domains is equally important the emphasis on Well Led is noteworthy for care providers. Updated guidance from CQC makes clear that judgments on Well Led can have a limiting factor on overall rating resulting in a “Requires Improvement ”rather than a “Good” or “Outstanding” for a service.
More than ever before commissioners and regulators are looking for “support” for the care home management team regardless of the size of the Provider. Anecdotal evidence from the largest providers suggest that this is the weakest link in assuring quality.
In early August 2015, 32% of homes inspected under the new CQC methodology, within 30 miles of London, were rated “Requires Improvement” or “Inadequate”. Over 59% of homes haven't been inspected yet another new methodology and it is expected that hundreds of homes could go from “all green ticks” to being under performers.
